Build one strong profile

Headshot, full-length, a smile, your stats and skills. Complete profiles rank higher in casting-director searches and get invited to castings you never applied for.

Search & submit daily

New castings post every morning and fill within hours. Ten minutes a day beats two hours on Sunday. Submit only where you match the brief — quality over volume.

Self-tape or attend

Most first rounds are now a phone self-tape: slate your name, a short read or movement, a full-length turn. Callbacks and fittings happen in person.

Book, shoot, invoice

Confirm the rate, usage and call time in writing. Show up early, be easy to work with, invoice the same week. Repeat bookings are where the real income is.

Free vs. Paid

Where to spend, where not to.

Most platforms let you browse free and charge to submit. That's legitimate — the platform is the product. Paying a casting or a photographer to be considered never is.

Pricing tiers change often — treat these as guides and check the current plan page before you pay. Start with one paid platform in your market, prove it books, then add a second.

Reading a Casting Notice

Decode the fine print before you apply.

The rate is never just the rate. Here's a typical commercial notice with every term explained.

National Healthcare Brand — Real Families & Patients

Non-union · Local hire, Los Angeles · Shoots 2 days
Rate: $750/day + usage $1,500 (all media, US, 1 year)
Fitting: $150 · Conflicts: healthcare, 1 year
Submit: current digitals + self-tape — slate, 30-sec intro, full-length turn.
Cancellation: 50% inside 24h · Net 30 via payroll service

Day rate

Payment for your time, usually an 8- or 10-hour day. Overtime should be stated.

Usage / Buyout

Paid for the right to use your image — by media, territory and time. Often larger than the day rate. Always ask.

Conflicts / Exclusivity

A promise not to advertise a competitor for a period. Should be paid for — the longer, the more.

Union / Non-union

SAG-AFTRA (US) and Equity (UK) jobs have set minimums and residuals; most commercial modeling starts non-union.

Local hire

You cover your own travel and lodging. Don't claim a city you can't reliably reach.

Fitting fee

A small payment for wardrobe fittings before the shoot. Standard on TV and larger print.

Residuals

Ongoing payments each time a union commercial airs. Non-union jobs use buyouts instead.

Net 30 / 60

How many days after the invoice you'll be paid. Payroll services are normal; asking for a deposit from you is not.

The unglamorous skills that actually book.

The 60-second self-tape

  • Phone horizontal, at eye level, in daylight or a lamp in front of you
  • Plain wall behind you; no music, no filters
  • Slate: name, city, height, agency (or "freelance")
  • Do exactly what the notice asks — nothing extra
  • Full-length slow turn at the end
  • Export under 100MB; name the file "Lastname_Firstname_Role"

Being rebooked

  • Arrive 15 minutes early, nails clean, hair as in your photos
  • Bring the wardrobe options they asked for, ironed, on hangers
  • Phone away on set; ask the producer before posting anything
  • Take direction fast and cheerfully — that's the whole job
  • Send a two-line thank-you the same day

Kids & babies on platforms

  • Profiles are created and run by a parent — never in the child's name alone
  • Update photos every 2–3 months; babies every 4–6 weeks
  • US: state work permits; California requires a Coogan trust account for earnings
  • UK: local-authority performance licence and licensed chaperone for paid work
  • A parent is on set at all times, and you can leave at any time

Protect Yourself

Red flags on casting platforms.

Legitimate platforms police their listings, but scammers still post. These rules catch nearly all of them.

Never…

  • Pay to apply, to "hold a spot", or for a "callback fee"
  • Use a photographer the casting insists on
  • Accept a cheque for more than the rate and refund the difference
  • Move the conversation to WhatsApp or Telegram before booking
  • Send ID documents before a signed booking confirmation
  • Attend a casting at a private residence or hotel room

  • Names the brand or production (or a known casting office)
  • States rate, usage and dates up front
  • Communicates through the platform or a company email domain
  • Casts at a studio, office or public location with other people present
  • Pays you — never the other way around

  • Check the email domain matches the company website
  • Ask for the production company and call sheet before travelling

Are the castings on this page live listings?
They're representative of the casting categories, locations and pay ranges running on these platforms right now, refreshed regularly. Live listings change hourly and require a platform login to view, so tap any casting to see how that category works, then use the Global Job Finder or "Apply on…" to open the real-time listings on the platform.
Do I need experience to apply?
No. Real-people, family, baby and mature castings specifically want people who don't look like models. A complete profile with current photos matters far more than credits. Your first two or three bookings will come from being available, local and easy to work with.
Which platform should I start with?
US: Casting Networks or Backstage for commercial; Central Casting for background work in LA, NY or Atlanta. UK: StarNow or Mandy to start, Spotlight once you have credits. Europe: e-TALENTA or StarNow. Australia/NZ: StarNow and Casting Networks. Open any platform card above for its full profile.
Is it worth paying for a platform subscription?
Usually yes for one platform in your market — a single booking covers a year of fees. Pay for the platform, never for a casting, and never for a photographer a casting insists on. See the Free vs. Paid table above.
Can I use platforms and have an agency at the same time?
In commercial modeling, often yes — many agencies are non-exclusive. Check your contract; some ask you to route all bookings through them. If you're unsigned, platforms are how you build the credits that make an agency submission stronger. See the Agency List.
How much can I realistically earn?
A commercial print day typically pays $300–$1,500 in the US (£250–£1,000 UK), TV spots more with usage, background work $150–$250/day. Most working commercial models treat it as strong part-time income built on repeat clients — results vary with market, availability and effort.
My baby is 8 months old. Is it too late / too early?
Right on time. Most baby work is booked in the 3–18 month window, by size and temperament. Set up a parent-run profile on one platform, update photos every few weeks, and only accept castings where you're welcome on set the entire time.
